Industry observers this week batted away suggestions that the energy sector could be facing an existential threat, as UN negotiators float the idea of ending the use of fossil fuels and decarbonising the global economy by 2050. The new proposed 2050 targets – a departure from the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommendation to phase out fossil fuels by 2100 - appeared in a draft negotiating text tabled at the UN COP 20 climate summit in Lima early this week.
