The energy demand for a nation's domestic, industrial and recreational applications can account for up to half of its energy resources. Globally, it is estimated that over 320 billion kWh of energy is used every day, which equates to about 22 bulbs remaining on non-stop for every person on Earth (National Geographic, 2005). Household emissions account for 31 percent of total carbon emissions in the UK and one of the recommendations of the Energy White Paper (March 2003) is for 20 percent of the UK's electricity needs to be generated from renewable energy by 2020. The UK currently has set a target of 10 percent of its electricity to come from renewable-energy sources by 2010.
