Italian soil services have significantly increased the volume of data collection on soils and the number of maps produced during the last 20 years due to the pioneer projects of Emilia Romagna and Lombardy pedological services and participation in the European project of the Joint Research Centre of Ispra coordinated by the Experimental Institute of Soil Studies and Protection in Florence. Relationships between characteristics of landscapes and soils, and application of soil-landscape models are considered. Use of field survey data in combination with kriging and co-kriging geostatistics for development of soil maps is outlined. Studies were conducted on use of spatial interpolation for cartography in the river Piave region, Veneto province. Information is presented on use of mathematical models in methods of spatial interpolation and univariate geostatistics. Structural analyses of spatial variation, interpolation of data on profiles and data of drilling, and interpolation of bivariate geostatistics are outlined.
