The Shale Gas Exploration saga carries on in South Africa, with positions being taken for and against -despite the fact that we do not know whether there is even any shale gas in the Karoo at all. The Karoo Basin differs from most other Phanerozoic sedimentary basins in the world today, in that it is sitting on top of one of the world's large igneous provinces. South Africa might not have been the real estate destination of choice 1 80 million years ago, and some of the remnants of that LIP event include significant numbers of dolerite sills and dykes emplaced into the stratigraphy. Is the gas there - and if yes, will it be 'wet' gas or 'dry' gas? The only way to know is to do some drilling.
