In history, many authors developed models to predict con-tact behavior. Greenwood and Williamson' assumeda Gaussian distribution of asperity heights that arespherical with a constant radius of curvature. The sur-face roughness is described by three stochastic parameters.Alternative models were developed by Nayak,~2Whitehouseand Archard,~3and Whitehouse and Phillips.~(4'5)Unfortu-nately, the parameters of all stochastic models depend onthe measurement resolution. Greenwood showed that corre-sponding autocorrelation functions are not differentiable fora vanishing grid size h.~6Poon and Bhushan~7demonstratedthe influence of the resolution of the applied measurementequipment.
