Carbon dioxide (CO2) has a great deal of potential as a refrigerant. Some argue that the use of CO2 in passenger vehicle air conditioning alone could help reduce harmful CO2 emissions worldwide and may actually be cheaper to manufacture and maintain in the long run. Others disagree, citing the use of CO2 technologies as being less cost-effective than other refrigerants. The use of CO2 as the next wave of vehicle refrigerants is an area of intense debate, being dubbed the 'Cool War'.
