Sedation for pediatric GI endoscopy.

The method of sedation for endoscopy in children is really a matter of choice, both for the physician and for the needs of the patient.1 Many factors must be considered, including the patient's condition, ASA classification, the type of procedure (ie, diagnostic versus therapeutic), the anticipated level of cooperation from the patient, the parents' and patient's preference after being provided these choices and explanation of their risks, as well as the endoscopist's experiences.1 There is consensus that general anesthesia is necessary for complicated therapeutic procedures, patients with neurologic problems, patients at high risk for cardiopulmonary complications, and for uncooperative patients who have failed intravenous sedation.The study by Mamula et al15 has a clear take-home message, that with proper patient selection, intravenous sedation is a safe and effective method for sedation in pediatric endoscopy.
