Covered esophageal self-expandable metal stents in the nonoperative management of postoperative colorectal anastomotic leaks

The temporary use of covered self-expandable metal stents (CSEMS) and covered self-expandable plastic stents has been described in the management of benign leaks, perforations, and fistulae of the esophagus, stomach, post-surgical anastomoses of the upper GI tract, and the biliary tree. Currently, in the United States, CSEMSs are available only for the esophagus and bile duct. However, their proven safety, efficacy, and ease of deployment and removal may warrant their use for benign disease elsewhere in the GI tract. In this case series, we report our experience with the use of esophageal CSEMSs for the management of benign postoperative colorectal anastomotic leaks.
