Bacteria isolated from outbreaks affecting cultured sole, Solea senegalensis (Kaup).

A bacteriological study from samples of 18 outbreaks affecting farmed sole (Solea senegalensis, Kaup.) received during 2000 and 2003 has been carried out. Most outbreaks occurred during summer and autumn, and affected fish with sizes ranging from 10 to 400 g in weight. The most frequently isolated microorganisms from the outbreaks were Photobacterium damselae ssp. piscicida and Vibrio harveyi. Other microorganisms isolated with a lower frequency were V. parahaemolyticus and Vibrio sp. and occasionally Pseudomonas spp. and Tenacibaculum maritimum. The outbreaks that resulted in the highest mortalities of cultured sole were due to P. damselae ssp. piscicida and V. harveyi. Resistance to different antimicrobials have been observed in the case of V. harveyi and P. damselae ssp. piscicida..
