This is a great time to be looking for a job in gastroenterology. Multiple factors have converged to make this a strong "buyer's market" for those leaving a fellowship.1. There is a nationwide shortage of gastroenterologists because of significant cutbacks in GI training slots; the country is now down to approximately 300 trainees per year from a peak of 500.2. The average age of the practicing gastroenterologist is approaching 50, suggesting less productivity per physician in the future.3. The advent of screening colonoscopy and other technologic advancements has swamped the field with additional endoscopic work; most gastroenterologists now spend more than 50% of their workweek doing endoscopic procedures.4. The U.S. population is rapidly aging, which will put additional demands on practitioners.
