Statement regarding Professor doctor Mehmet Haberal, issued by the International Society for Burn Injuries, and unanimously passed by the General Assembly, September 12, 2012

It is a matter of great concern that Professor Doctor Mehmet Haberal, past-president of this Society, has been held in detention by the Turkish authorities for the past three years and five months.Dr. Haberal is an eminent surgeon and academic whose contributions to medicine have spread far beyond the borders of Turkey. He has been a major figure in the development of burn care in Turkey, having established five burn centres throughout the country. His commitment to burn medicine is well documented..In 1980, he established the Turkish Burn Foundation and four years later he become a founding member of the Mediterranean Burn Council. Later he established the Middle East Fire and Disaster Society. He has supported the International Society for Burn Injuries for many years, including chairmanship of the ISBI Disaster Committee. In 2006, having served on the Executive Committee, he became President of the International Society for Burn Injuries from 2006 to 2008.
