"THE PROBLEM WITH MANY conceptual gardens is that they're either ugly or in your face", says Mair Ellis, SGD student member whose 'Plant Spa' (her first show garden) features in the Conceptual Gardens class at the Hampton Court Palace Show this year (8-13 July). "I hope my garden will be a graceful way of encouraging people to think about major environmental health and humanitarian issues that the world is threatened by". Hers is, according to the RHS, the first garden to put hydroponics on public display. The series of elegantly designed yet other-worldly curved pyramidal acrylic pods might just set a new fashion trend in domestic garden design. Though both system and pods could function horticulturally in any real garden, the point is that Conceptual Gardens are expected to ask and raise questions, and get a message across.
