Garden and Cosmos: The Royai paintings of Jodhpur at the British Museum is, says its curator Richard Blurton, "a journey through the landscape of the senses to the landscape of the soul." Indeed, this is an astonishing journey told through the gardenand the landscape and recounted through 54 paintings previously unseen in Europe, from the Royal Collection at the Mehrangarh Museum Trust in Jodhpur. The museum was set up by the current Maharajah Gaj Singh II, and houses paintings created for his ancestors from this Rajisthani state. The luxuriant foliage and landscapes depicted are surprising given that Jodhpur is on the edge of the Thar Desert.
