A seven-metre torpedo believed to have been fired at HM5 Royal Oak by a German submarine in 1939 was safely detonated on 6th April 2016. Royal Navy divers attached explosives to the torpedo on the seabed in Scapa Flow, Orkney. It is now hoped part of the torpedo, including the propeller, can be salvaged for display. The device was first spotted in February during a routine sonar survey by Sula Diving for Orkney Islands council.
