Transition from VDP to resident maxillofacial SHO

Over the last five years increasing numbers of newly qualified dentists are entering resident oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) senior house officer (SHO) posts as part of a 'prespecialist' general professional training (GPT) scheme confering eligibility to enter the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons (MFDS) examination. The chief dental officer's report in 1995 suggested that young dentists should undertake an initial two-year period of GPT.
