Pre-owned bus sales make up a large segment of the bus and motorcoach industry. While annual sales of pre-owned vehicles range from 1,500 to 2,200 vehicles, used bus dealers concur that every customer's decision to purchase used over new hinges on two basic considerations - money and application. More often than not prospective bus owners in start up ventures simply lack enough capital to invest in new equipment out the chute. A tight budget might allow two used vehicles instead of one new bus. A customer might also put together a package that includes both new and used vehicles. "Operators new in the business often like to build their alliance with a coach dealer through their initial purchases of used vehicles," says John Morrison, vice president, coach sales for Motor Coach Industries (MCI). "Once they establish trust with a dealer they work their way into new equipment as means allow."
