摘要

Introduction: Rupture of the patellar tendon is an uncommon injury produced by an indirect mechanism and accounts for 3 % of injuries to the knee. The rupture is caused by forced flexion of the knee as a result of an eccentric quadriceps contraction force [4]. Usually, these injuries appear in patients under the age of 40 years and represent the final stage of degenerative tendinopathy [5]. Nonsurgical management is ineffective, and early operative management is mandatory to restore the extensor mechanism of the knee after the injury for optimal results. Patellar tendon ruptures are also seen in patients with systemic diseases that adversely affect the soft tissues such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus.
