The mobile phone industry was treading new ground as it moved into the 1990s. Growth in the mobile phone market was running at levels that exceeded even the most optimistic predictions. In 1990 there were 11m mobile handset users worldwide; by 1993 that had risen to 33m. The period also saw the introduction of the first GSM phones, which simplified cross network and international connectivity, and the beginning of a migration from business to personal use. This trend was accelerated by the introduction of prepay tariffs in 1995.
