Different models are available in order to explain the initiation of gauge corner cracking due to Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF). The most famous models are the shakedown map, the Dang Van criteria and the RCF damage function. These models were applied for the prediction of RCF cracks in curves on the high speed line Cologne - Frankfurt and on a mixed traffic line as well. The RCF damage function in combination with the crack propagation rate of head checks fits exactly with observations. It is a useful tool to estimate rail grinding intervals.
