On 22 November 2005 six persons, including the applicant, were charged with unlawful business activities and money laundering. On 13 February 2006 the Dzerzhinskiy District Court of St Petersburg ordered his placement in custody and one day later he was placed in remand centre SIZO-3 in St Petersburg. On the same day he was examined by the remand centre doctor and diagnosed with hypertension and ischaemic heart disease, but he refused the proposed treatment.
