Currently PET/CT has brought a new perspective into the fields of clinical and preclinical imaging. The combination of anatomical structures revealed by CT and the functional information from PET in one image with high fusion accuracy provides an advanced diagnostic tool and research platform. It has been documented extensively that PET/CT changes the staging and therefore the management of oncology patients. The use of novel radiotracers such as 68Ga, nC-choline, and 18F-fluorethyltyrosine makes this imaging technique even more attractive. Major drawbacks are that CT provides only limited soft tissue contrast and exposes the patient to a (low) radiation dose. Since the PET and CT scanners are hard-wired back-to-back and share a common patient bed, PET/CT does not allow simultaneous data acquisition.
