Countdown to calving

To sold the calves in October, four weeks after weaning and just before they ran out of good pasture. The cows spent the fall on our mountain pastures, saving the green feed in the fields for the weaned calves. The dry cows did fine on native grass until it snowed in early December. We had to bring them down to the fields to start feeding hay, Now, we're trying to finish fall projects before calving season starts in January. We're rebuilding several old corrals and making a "sick barn" so we'll neverhave to put sick calves in the calving barns. We used to put a sick calf and its mother in old log sheds to get them out of the bad weather for a little intensive care. But, those old sheds are more than 100 years old and falling down. The new sick barnwill have enough big stalls for six pairs.
