CHEMICALS: ENVIRONMENT MINISTERS KEEN TO HAVE THEIR SAY ABOUT HEW REGIME

The December 22 Environment Council in Brussels gave Ministers from the EU Member States and the accession countries a chance to hold their first debate on the proposed new rules governing the chemicals sector. The proposal would create a Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals system (REACH). In the mould of the German and Austrian Ministers, several officials took the opportunity to point out that the Competitiveness Council may have been given the nod by the EU Summit, but the initiative for this revamp of EU chemical policy lies with the Environment Council and the Ministers in this forum mean to have their say.
