FOOD LABELLING: HEALTH MINISTERS UNANIMOUSLY ENDORSE FOOD CLAIMS REGULATION

The EU's Health Ministers unanimously endorsed the European Commission's Regulation on health and nutrition claims at their June 3 Council meeting in Luxembourg, making up for a recent setback when the draft law was watered down by the European Parliament. The Ministers supported the Commission on two key elements of the Regulation which had been controversially scrapped by the EP in a plenary vote on May 26: they retained Article 4 on nutrient profiles, and they kept the authorisation procedure instead of the notification procedure pushed by the Parliament Health and Consumer Commissioner Markos Kyprianou, who had made clear his opposition to the Parliament's two key amendments, welcomed the political agreement at Council: "The proposal endorsed by Ministers today guarantees citizens clear, truthful and reliable information on the food they are eating", he said.
