Oil pollution and trade sanctions

In Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines v Steamship Mutual Underwriting Association [2010] EWHC 2661 (Comm) the High Court considered the effect of government sanctions against an Iranian entity on oil pollution cover provided by a P&I club The claimant, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines ("the insured") was a member of the defendant P&I club which provided cover for various shipping risks, including bunker oil pollution. Such cover is required for tankers by virtue of the International Bunkers Convention 2001.
