The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. The majority of cervical cancer cases are related to HPV infection, and Latina immigrants are at a greater risk for developing cervical cancer as a result of HPV infection than other racial/ethnic groups. Few studies have focused on HPV awareness among Latina immigrants.From 2007-2009, 543 Latina immigrants living in Alabama completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire in Spanish to determine whether they had heard about HPV and specific questions related to infection. The average age of the study population was 31 years and number of years living in the United States was 6.5.
