Conversion of PbS-based Shaft Furnace Slurries into Lead-bearing Concentrate

Slurries from copper concentrate smelting in the shaft furnace are valuable material with high concentrations of lead, copper and zinc in sulfide form, but they also contain high amounts of organic carbon (aliphatic and aromatic) as well as water, which hinder their processing. The paper presents results of some laboratory experiments with transformation of the slurries to PbS-rich, dry and odourless concentrate as well as their oxidation to sulfate form. There is also a description of experiments with the chlorination of PbS concentrate in aqueous solution followed by electrolysis of lead chloride and recovery of Cu-Zn concentrate from basic liquor. A schematic diagram of the process is presented.
