摘要

Numerical simulations of drilling mechanics rely on appropriate rock models. After decades of drilling research, many of these simulations have been developed with problem-specific complexity ranging from equations based on constant mechanical-specific energy to models including assumptions on chip geometry to Finite Element and Discrete Element models. For the last ten years, Discrete Element models using beam-bonded spherical particles have been studied for cutting simulations. This intuitive approach enables successive incorporation of industry's informal knowledge about the rock cutting process and clear interpretation of the failure modes.
