Drilling Technology Evolution Brings Step Change in Efficiency, Unlocks New Opportunities in the Achimov Development of Urengoy Field

The Urengoy field is one of the largest hydrocarbon fields in the world, with gas reserves exceeding 10 trillion m~3 (10~(13) m~3). Development of the field began in 1978 from the shallowest Cenomanian; later development was in Valanginian deposits. Recently, due to extreme exhaustion of reserves and declining production, development was started on the deepest deposits, the Achimov, which contains about 30% of all reserves of the field. Moreover, the Achimov deposits of the Urengoyskoe field may provide about 10% of gas production in Russia by 2020, and development of these reserves to the operational stage may bring new life to the field [1].
