Morphology of the male adult, larva, and pupa, the karyotype, and chromosome polymorphism are described for the new species Chironomus arcustylus sp. n. of the Ch. obtusidens group. The species is well distinguished by thickened and curved gonostylusin males. The pupa and larva of the new species can be identified only by the karyotype. The karyotype of Ch. arcustylus differs from those of other species in the Ch. obtusidens group by fixed species-specific banding sequences in five of the seven chromosome arms (А, В, С, D, and F). The banding sequences in the A and В arms of Ch. arcustylus are identical to those in the E arm of Ch. obtusidens and G arm of Ch. acutiventris, respectively. The level of heterozygosis reaches 75%. The A and В chromosome arms are polymorphic. Ten banding sequences of polytene chromosomes were revealed; eight of them had not been previously observed in species of the genus Chironomus .
