Canada-based Purthanol Resources Ltd. announced March 20 pre-industrial results of lipids produced using yeast or fungi in fermentors, which the company touts could be a viable source as feedstock for biodiesel production. “The work demonstrates a clear advantage of this method compared to culture microalgae in a photobioreactor. Oleaginous yeast and fungi were isolated and tested to produce lipids. A high lipid content was observed so we went from autotrophic production bioreactors to heterotrophic production fermenters,” according to a company statement.
