SIX NEW SPECIES OF GYPONA FROM COLOMBIA (HEMIPTERA: CICADELLIDAE: GYPONINAE)

Six new species are added to the genus Gypona from Colombia: G. bidentata G. bicornis, G. biura, G. onca, G. mecona, and G. aglata. All are assigned to the subgenus Gypona. The genus Gypona was reviewed by DeLong and Freytag (1962, 1964). At that timethis genus included 146 species divided among four subgenera. Since 1964, 134 more species and 1 subgenus have been added (DeLong and Martinson, 1972; DeLong and Kolbe, 1974; DeLong and Freytag, 1975; DeLong and Linnavuori, 1977; DeLong and Triplehorn,1979; DeLong, 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1983). The genus is characterized by a foliaceous head with the striae on the crown longitudinal between the ocelli. The outer rows of setae on the hind tibia are all large. The male genitalia lack paraphysis, and thesubgenital plates are short and widened at the apex. The 42 species that are known to occur in Colombia were listed by Freytag and Sharkey (2002).
