摘要

On a busy traffic circle that runs around a monument of Gen. Robert E. Lee, Jesus 'Calva leans on a comer stoplight and waits. At 42, Calva is short and strong, showing age in the lines around his face and on his neck near the collar of his T-shirt. Calva comes to Lee Circle nearly every morning at 7 and waits, his T-shirt smartly tucked into belted khaki shorts with a cell phone holstered to his waist. His skin is dark and red, weathered from hours of labor under the New Orleans sun. He came here in November 2005 after Hurricane Katrina left the city destroyed and ripe for immigrant labor.
