Morphology and Fine Structure of Chemoreceptor Sensilla of Antennae and Maxillary Palpi of the Flour Moth Ephestia kuehniella Zell. Larvae (Lepidoptera, Phycitidae)

Arrangement, external morphology, and fine structure of antennal sensilla and sensilla of maxillary palpi of the flour moth Ephestia kuehniella Zell. larvae were studied hy scanning and transmitting electron microscopy- Antennal sensilla belong to 3 morphological types: basiconic (with 2 subtypes), chaetoid, and styloconic sensilla. Antennal receptor apparatus occupies the upper parts of 2nd and 3rd antennal segments and includes 1 short and 3 long basiconic sensilla. 1 trichoid sensillum. and 2 longand 2 short tactile sensilla. Two long basiconic sensilla on the 2nd antennal segment possess numerous wall pores in the cuticular part and a great number of embranchments of the dendrite. Styloconic sensillum on the 3rd segment possesses a long distalpart and is mullimo-dal. Two styloconic and 1 trichoid sensillum are situated on the galea of maxilla. Sensory apparatus of maxillary palpi includes 8 basiconic sensilla on the apex and a single digitiform sensillum with 2 sensory cells on the lateral surface of the 3rd segment. The number and fine structure of sensilla are similar in all instars. The possible function of these sensilla is discussed.
