A New Species of the Robber-fly Genus Oligopogon Loew (Diptera, Asilidae) from Armenia

A new species of the genus Oligopogon Loew, O. armeniacus sp. n., is described from Armenia. The holotype is deposited in the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg.A new robber-fly species described in the present paper was collected in 1959 in the Asni Gorge opening to the Araks River valley and grown with Rhamnus pallasii along the slopes. The specimen was attributed to the only species of the genus Oligopogon known in that time for the Palaearctic Region, O. hybotinus Loew described from Rhodes (Greece) (Richter, 1968). A revision of the Oligopogon species, with descriptions of four new species and with two keys to the known species of this genus, was publishedat the beginning of XXI century (Geller-Grimm and Hradsky, 2002). Attempts to identify the Armenian specimen with these keys were unsuccessful. The tax-on to which it belongs is characterized by a peculiar combination of the characters and is describedbelow as a species new to science. The holotype is deposited in the collection of the Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg).
