In a field experiment, the effect of vermicompost and chemical fertilizer application on growth and yield of paddy was studied during kharif, 1999 in a red soil of South Eastern Ghat Zone. The test crop was subjected to the treatments, namely, recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (60-30-30), vermicompost and FYM at 5 ton/hectare each applied alone (100 percent) and the graded doses of vermicompost and FYM (25, 50 and 75 percent) integrated with corresponding doses of chemical fertilizer. Results showed that the yield attributing characters like plant height, number of effective tillers, length of panicle and number of filled grains per panicle were influenced better by the integrated application of vermicompost and chemical fertilizer. Higheryield of grain (47.0 q/hectare) and straw (58.0 q/hectare) was recorded in the treatment receiving 50 percent of chemical fertilizer integrated with 50 percent vermicompost close (2.5 t/hectare) which was at par with the yield due to recommended dose ofchemicalfertilizer and also beneficial from the soil health point of view.
