Aquaculture in Kolleru lake area for socio-economic development.

100 fish farmers in Kolleru lake, Andhra Pradesh, India, were interviewed to examine the potential of aquaculture in the area. The findings reveal a positive correlation between farm size and productivity. Entry into aquaculture by professionals shows that it is no more a monopoly of the illiterate. Analysis of the economics of aquaculture reveals that it is the most profitable venture in the area and hence investment in this field is rational. Scope of marketing has expanded from local to global which is the cause of the reasonable price being paid to the producers. This directly adds to the improvement of the socioeconomic conditions of aquaculturists. Opportunities for employment in aquaculture are observed to be fivefold.
