Profiles of dairy farmers in cooperative and non-cooperative farming system.

This study was carried out to determine the socioeconomic characteristics of the dairy farmers in Gaighata and Bagdah blocks of North-24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India. From each of the two blocks, 25% of the Village Level Milk Co-operative Societies (VLMCSs) were selected randomly, with 10 VLMCSs (25%) from Gaighata Block and 20 (25.64%) from Bagdah Block. From each of the selected milk cooperative societies, four dairy farmers were selected randomly, two from Member Co-operative Society (MCS) and two from Non-member Co-operative Society (NMCS). With this, 60 from MCS and 60 from NMCS were selected and directly interviewed. Results revealed that majority of the dairy farmers belonged to age group below 35 years in both MCS and NMCS. Most of them have cultivation as main occupation, belonged to agriculture caste, had primary level of education, have nuclear family with 5 members, possessed 1 ha land, stay in mixed houses, did not attend any training programme, and possessed cycle and chair..
