Economic impacts of water pollution on human health and migration in Nanjangud Industrial area of Karnataka State.

In this study, the cost of health services due to pollution, WTP for potable drinking water, determinants of WTP for chinking water and factors influencing pollution induced migration in Nanjangud Industrial area of Karnataka State were examined. The study reported that due to pollution the farmers are spending more on health services as an averting strategy to reduce the effect of pollution in pollution affected villages and the health expenses on children were more compared to adults. The analysis on the WTP for drinking water revealed that education of head of household, higher income and family size has positively influenced on WTP for clean water. The probit analysis for determinants of pollution induced migration shows that level of pollution in the affected area is yet to reach the level of human abandonment. But, the tabulation analysis of the trend of migration in terms of duration and distance (of migration) evident that high frequency human migration in pollution affected villages compare to unaffected villages. The study has stressed on the need for imposition of green taxation on industries and creating awareness of pollution and its ill effect at community level through various developmental departments and NGOs.
