After months of arduous negotiations, sometimes mired in hopeless and acrimonious debate between the various negotiating groups, in particular the developing countries and the developed countries, the Outcome Document of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development/Rio+20 was adopted by acclamation by over 130 States on the evening of 22 June 2012. It was a major achievement for the Brazilian hosts of Rio+20 who played a crucial role in presenting a text just prior to the High-Level meeting that bridged some of the glaring differences and papered over and postponed decisions of other key issues. The UN Secretary-General had said that we needed to remember that there was a commodity in critically short supply for the world-TIME!
