John Thompson,Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of Illinois,Urbana-Champaign,has produced a monumental work in Wetlands Drainage,River Modification,and Sectoral Conflict in the Lower Illinois Valley,1890-1930.Once the bread and butter of geographers,the production of regional geographic studies has unfortunately declined in the past three decades in favor of more scientifically based,consumer-oriented geographic research.Thompson demonstrates the value of a regional geographic study in this work,which is very well written and thoroughly researched.While sometimes difficult to read because of the somewhat arcane early-twentieth-century phraseology,this book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about the systematic destruction of the lower Illinois River valley.
