Growth prospects of the Indian Steel Industry after October 2008

Steel industry world-wide suffered a severe setback in the latter part of the year 2008 in the aftermath of the global economic meltdown. The Indian economy and India's thriving steel industry have both been affected adversely by the economic downturn that originated in the developed west and its contagion that spread quickly far and wide across the globalized world of the 21st century. The silver lining, however, has been the fact that the severity of the crisis has been less in India compared not only to the developed economies of the west but also to the steel-active emerging countries of the world (Table 1). Amongst the BRIC economies only China and India have posted some increase in production, albeit marginal.
