Characteristics & Applications of Chrome - Manganese Stainless Steel

Developed over last six decades, Chrome-Manganese stainless steels now comprise a whole family of lustrous products in a variety of shapes, sizes and compositions to facilitate optimal selection of most appropriate grades for a large number of applications. These stainless steels have been produced and marketed in austenitic and duplex varieties. This paper describes, properties of some of these steels and how they compare with Chrome-Nickel austenitic stainless steels. Some of the applications where these grades have been successfully used are covered. Stainless steels containing 15 percent Cr and 12 percent Mn were in use in Germany as early as 1940's. This grade was used in dairy industry, beer industry and for general household appliances. In late 40's Allegheny Ludlum developed several chrome-manganese-nickel alloys as possible substitutes for 302 and 304.
