Wedgwood Jasper Chimneypieces - 1780 or 1880?

One of Josiah Wedgwood's purposes in developing jasper in 1774 and 1775 was to make tablets suitable for interior decoration and for chimneypieces in particular. In a famous letter written in 1775 Josiah says to Bentley: 'Perhaps Flaxman can model you a good tablet for a chimneypiece, you know we have not one of the proper size. It should be modelled on a piece of ground glass or marble and you may allow one inch in eight for shrinking. I need not tell you that the figures should be open and managed properly for a coloured ground.'1
