New ways to make plate part I - attributes of outstanding plate mills

The main current trends in plate mill investment and process concept have been reviewed. Three principles that are widely applicable have been identified. Process science built-in; Operational efficiency via process control; Sufficiency of mill power; Examples of these principles in design practice (especially layout considerations) and in active technology development (especially accelerated cooling and model-based control) have been described. In the second part of this paper, to be presented at the end of the plate sessions of this conference, the project implementation of the technology will be considered.
