Ilsenburg heavy-plate mill: Modernisation of the mill stand area and of the hot-plate leveller

Given the ever stricter requirements from heavy-plate customers for closer tolerances and improved flatness and in view of the results of in-house analyses, Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH (ILG) decided to undertake a comprehensive modernisation of their mill stand area. In addition, the analyses made on the hot-plate leveller indicated flatness problems in terms of centre buckles and wavy edges. These results plus overloading of the mill owing to the wide range of products also necessitated a modernisation of the hot-plate leveller. Both units were modified as part of a summer shutdown. On the mill stand, the plant-related conditions for yielding a better product quality and process quality were achieved by the following actions: a new hydraulic adjustment system, upgrading of the existing work-roll bending system, new Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems for adjustment and bending, including improved online process visualisation, installation of a new three-point thickness measuring facility, plus ILG's own work on the automation system.
