At Chandrapur Ferro-Alloy Plant, Chandrapur (Maharashtra), Ferro-alloys are crushed for various sizes as per the requirement of different users Fines (0-3mm) are generated during crushing and sizing. The market value of these fines is low and the demand is small. In view of the above, a study on the prospect of converting the Ferro-alloys fines (Size < 3mm) into agglomerates by briquette making was taken up. Different batch compositions were formulated with Fe-Mn/Si-Mn fines (0-3mm) and were mixed with different binders and additives in a laboratory mixer and briquettes have been made using laboratory briquetting machine. Briquettes produced were air dried for 24 hours and oven-dried at 110°C/24hrs., heat-treated at 150°C,200oC,300°C and 600°C for 6,8,12& 16 hours. All the briquettes were tested for cold crushing strength and shatter test. It has been found that the maximum strength obtained after oven drying at 150°C was the briquettes made with resin, which indicated many fold increase in strength that is from green briquette (49 kg/cm~2) to oven dried (102 kg/cm2). Similarly, after shatter test, maximum retention obtained was for resin-bonded briquette (72%) after 4th drop.
