The series of analyses of the 32-ton stacker cranes proved to be extremely advantageous. The ability to use finite element analysis as a tool combined with a drafting and modeling package provided the flexibility required to complete the redesigns accurately and in a timely manner.The finite element analysis identified the high-stress areas that were known to be a problem as well as future potential problem areas. This tool permitted the rapid analysis of several different redesign scenarios. The development of these designs usinga CAD system also permitted modifications and design changes to be made quickly and efficiently. Design improvements incidental to the structural modifications highlighted were made, increasing the reliability and maintainability of this equipment.Both the proposed repairs and the future installation of a new mast and turntable will reduce the large cost of maintaining this equipment and will ensure the safety of the operators and maintenance personnel.
