In the recent past, Steel Industry is undergoing a sea change and the demand of steel in national and international market has gone up tremendously. From Table-1, an overview can be taken so far as the steel production is concerned in international level. In the realm of coal production, India ranks third as may be seen from Table-2. Most of the iron ore reserve is hematite in nature and contains more than 60% Fe whereas the coal reserve is largely nonmetallurgical medium high volatile content with ash % more than 20. Under such condition, the planning for steel production will to a great extent depending on direct reduction of iron ore using coal as reductant for production of sponge iron. In this article, I would like to focus on the future of sponge iron industry in our state keeping in view, the total metallic requirement of our country.
