EAF steelmakers today face many challenges in a competitive and rapidly changing global market. For the melting operation, steelmakers are demanding improved process optimisation based on a holistic approach. Factors considered are cost, total energy, productivity, yield and environmental impact. Increased awareness has generated the need for a more conscientious approach to the use of natural resources and the release of pollutants into the environment.Alternatively, the global market has increased the economical challenges for steelmakers, forcing them to work towards reducing their production costs in order to remain competitive.This paper outlines Tenova's technologies aimed at taking a holistic approach for dynamic process control and optimisation for steelmaking operation along with process developments aimed at meeting the challenges faced by today's steelmaker: reduced conversion costs ami reduced environmental impact.These technologies, named iSteel~R, include:- EFSOP~R system for the continuous real-time measurement of EAF process offgas along with automatic. closed loop control of the injection of carbon, natural gas and oxygen.- i EAF~R: "intelligent electric arc furnace" automation system for the dynamic control oj the process based on real-time mass & energv balances and the dynamic characterisation of the process.- i BOF~R: "intelligent Basic Oxygen Furnace" process optimisation for slopping detection, end point prediction and auto tapping- i Recovery~R: Heat Recovery-energy recovery from exhausted furnace ojfgas (described in n separate specific paper).
